PADI Divemaster
Divemaster is the first professional ranking in the system of diver education. As such, the Divemaster course includes many different aspects of diving and takes longer to complete than any other course. The pre-requisites for joining the course is that the candidate is a PADI Rescue Diver or equivalent; has a minimum of 20 logged dives to start the course and 60 to finish, including deep and night dives; and is at least 18 years of age. The course itself consists of 4 basic sections: diving theory, stamina exercises, general dive skills and training as a dive leader and professional assistant. The dive theory is self-study, although of course, your instructor is always available to explain any difficulties you may have. The materials required for the course include the Divemaster crew pack, the Encyclopaedia of Recreational Diving and the Diving Knowledge Workbook.
As a Divemaster you will be expected to be physically fit and the purpose of the stamina exercises is to test your fitness. Each exercise is timed and marks allocated accordingly. Time will be set apart during the course for you to practice. The section on general diving skills includes mapping, a rescue assessment and in-water skills. One of the courses a Divemaster is able to conduct is the PADI Scuba Tune-Up, which involves demonstrating skills. Your in-water skills must therefore be of a high standard.
The emphasis on the Divemaster course will be on training as a dive leader and professional assistant. The previous sections provide the background to this. You will learn how to plan and lead a dive for qualified divers; how to conduct the PADI courses that a Divemaster is qualified to teach and how to act as a professional assistant. You must reach a certain standard in all these areas to qualify. It is difficult to predict how long the Divemaster course will take as extra training may be needed in one or more areas. With Pirates Dive Center you will have the advantage of working with 'real' qualified divers and students.
